A high-end chocolatier that sells hand-made chocolate (it is famous for its mice and penguin, the latter costs three dollars each). A better bargain is the pastry, which is devilishly good. Compared to Finale, the desserts at LA Burdick are more European-like. The drink list is decent but expect to pay more than other places.

Specialty coffee & tea. Fresh, locally made pastry. Wine selection & cheese. Gourmet sandwiches.
Toscanini's serves super-premium homemade ice cream as well as deluxe coffees and the like. Quoted by the New York Times as "The best ice cream in the world." Especially good are the Burnt Caramel flavor and the hot fudge.

Always crowded with people working on laptops, reading books / newspapers / magazines / other materials with words and/or pictures printed, mediating, etc. What is discouraging is that people usually take only one of the two seats at a table but the spare ones are marked: occupied. In the seldom warmer days, customers can choose to sit on the benches and grass outside the store. Despite the lack of space, Peet's coffee is far better than what Starbucks could dream to offer.
Two locations at Harvard Square, one at Mass Ave, another at JFK. The one at Mass Ave has been turned into a semi-public sphere, thanks to the chess players who move in the store when it rains, people who bring Chinese takeout to eat inside. It is also popular with tourists. Even with fine weather, don't choose to sit outside as the tables and chairs are dotted with pigeon droppings; or the pigeons can drop on your head / food. The JFK location is much smaller but calmer.
